Understanding the Affordable Heatlhcare ActEnrollment for the long anticipated insurance exchanges of the Affordable Care Act (ACA)/Obamacare is finally here!  As of May 2013, 16 states and the District of Columbia had opted to set up state-run insurance exchanges, 7 other states had formed partnerships with the Federal government, and 27 states had completely Federally-run exchanges.  Want to see what options your state offers?  Check out this website.  For help with eligibility and procedural matters concerning enrollment, the Federal government’s call center number is 1-800-318-2596 or use their website.

Open enrollment begins October 1, 2013 and ends March 31, 2014, but most officials are recommending a waiting period of a few months to allow online systems to become fully functional, and to work out expected hiccups in the process.  Small businesses will likely have to wait longer to begin reaping savings from the new law. Many exchanges are concentrating on individual mandates first, and as a result some states have created separate marketplaces to service small business owners.  And although enrollment ends next year, December 14, 2013 is the government cut-off date to ensure coverage beginning January 1, 2014. Those who buy a plan in the last two months of open enrollment will have a one month delay in the start of their coverage.
