Manly Hearts – Beware of Testosterone Therapy!

beware of testosterone therapyEstrogen Replacement Therapy’s (ERT) benefit in protecting women from cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been well studied, but not always well received.  Enthusiasm for its use peaked in the 1990s, only to be replaced by concern and fear in the 2000s.  But the pendulum has swung once more in favor of a cautiously positive approach to its overall health benefits.  Caution should always prevail when implementing any new therapies, especially those involving changes to a major regulatory system in the body.  Take the now fashionable topic of low testosterone in men, or low T.  Any time you turn on the TV these days you see ads for gels, patches, tablets, and injections…all promising a cure for conditions resulting from a decrease in testosterone levels.  Low T therapies are currently only FDA approved for the treatment of hypogonadism, not for age-related fatigue, moodiness, low libido or muscle loss as the ads suggest.

Furthermore, a new study reaffirms earlier evidence pointing to an increased risk of non-fatal myocardial infarctions in men with pre-existing heart conditions while undergoing low T therapy.  The use of larger sample groups has always been hampered by this increased risk of heart attacks among the participants.  In fact, many of those earlier studies were ended prematurely.  Until the true risks and benefits of such therapies can be safely verified, the wise course of action remains to rely on natural solutions proven to increase  testosterone levels and maintain heart health in men:

♡ Sufficient Sleep: Lack of sleep results in hormonal imbalances including lowered testosterone

♡  Stay Active:  Physical activity activates signals in the brain that increase testosterone production.

♡  Maintain a Healthy Weight: Obesity and malnutrition are both associated with low T.

♡  Control Stress: The stress hormone cortisol prevents the production of testosterone.

So Men ignore those infomercials!   Instead get 7-8 hours of sleep, get off the couch, watch what you eat and listen to music or meditate.  Doctors also advise that you enjoy your work.  Centra is looking for a few good men who enjoy working as rehab professionals!  Call us at 800 535 0076 today!
